Elementary school students, middle schoolers, high schoolers and adults will compete in separate divisions of FOOD FIGHT.
There is no minimum or maximum number of people who can compete on a single team. Teams can be made up of entire classrooms, youth groups, businesses, etc - or they can simply be small groups of friends.
There is no limit on the number of teams/structures a particular entity may enter in the competition.
DISPLAY PLOTS & SIGNAGE
Each team will be assigned an indoor plot measuring 15 feet wide and 10 feet deep. The ceilings in the facility are at least two stories high.
Elementary, middle school and high school teams must pay $25 to reserve their plots. Adult teams must pay $50 to reserve their plots.
Each plot will be situated against at least one pipe-and-drape covered wall, so structures should not be designed as "sculptures in the round." Judges and passersby will not be able to walk all the way around each structure.
Teams are welcome to construct scenes/landscapes that cover the full floorspace of their plots.
Teams should not plan to decorate the walls adjacent to their structures or or hang anything from them, but can create a freestanding background (e.g. a wall of cans) instead.
Teams must furnish a freestanding sign (e.g. an easel) near the front of their display that lists the following:
1. Team Name (individual participant names optional)
2. Division (Elementary, Middle School, High School or Community)
3. Display Name (the title of your masterpiece...)
4. Team Statement (1 or 2 paragraphs describing the team's goals, construction process, food choices, etc.)
5. Ingredient List (including both food and non-food items)
We recommend that teams use cans to make up the bulk of their structures.
Boxes, bags and plastic containers of food can also be incorporated into your structure, but should be positioned so that they will withstand the weight of anything stacked on top of them for the full duration of the fair.
Glass containers are prohibited.
All food must be room temperature and remain unopened. Please do not build with pet food, alcohol, junk food (e.g soda, chips, candy) or perishable items like fruit.
Teams are welcome to wrap cans and boxes with paper, foil, etc for a mosaic effect, but original wrappers must always remain intact underneath so the Bay Area Food Bank can identify each can's contents and expiration date.
Each entry must be structurally self-supporting. Teams can incorporate non-food items like wire and plywood, but these extra materials must be noted on their display descriptions because judges will want to understand the complexity of each design when awarding certain prizes.
Permanent adhesives are prohibited.
AWARDS & VOTING
A variety of local businesses will be awarding prizes for their favorite structures - Categories will be announced later and might range from "healthiest display" and "funniest scene" to "best use of color" or "most gravity-defying design."
In each category, judges will give preference to displays that emphasize good nutrition and prioritize the Bay Area Food Bank's needs (e.g. judges would rather see 500 cans of tuna and beans than 500 bottles of ketchup and mustard).
Each award will include a trophy and a donation made to the Bay Area Food Bank in the winning team's name.
Guests of the fair will also be voting on "fan favorite" sculptures in each division, so competitors are encouraged to invite friends, family members and co-workers to stop by the fair and check out their hard work.
GENERAL PLANNING GUIDELINES
Teams will not need to contruct their structures overnight. Each team will have access to the Food Fight area of The Grounds for a full week prior to the fair.
There is no limit on the number of people involved in each team, but because display plots are in such close proximity to one another, we do ask that teams have no more than 5 people working inside their display plots at once.
Adults are allowed to assist students in the elementary and middle school divisions, but must always allow students to do as much of the work as possible. Students should make "hands on" contributions to every aspect of their team's build.
Teams are welcome to gather their cans from a food drive, purchase them using donated funds, etc - Teams are also encouraged to consider the custom "FAX and pull" partnership we've arranged with Costco, one of our prize sponsors. Each team must submit a sketch of their proposed design to email@example.com by no later than Sunday, October 18th. CAD files are not necessary.
Following the close of the fair, teams are encouraged to help volunteers load their food donations for transportation to the Bay Area Food Bank. Teams who cannot stay after must leave notes on how to dissassemble their structures.
